Ni Lemon Joe Schmidt's memories of a wonderful friend ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tasha was one of the friends I most looked forward to seeing online. We would often visit for hours after I should have been asleep. We'd talk about almost everything from scripts to running sims to our favorite old movies, but most of our conversations centered around OS. I learned most of what I know about the inner workings of OpenSim from those visits. Her expertise in all things technical never ceased to amaze me. She was always teaching me new things in subjects ranging from server setup to backup systems to reducing sim load and countless others.
Her work was the finest that I enjoyed when I first came here, just over a year and a half ago. Her expansive shopping mall was the first and only one besides Wright Plaza that I even knew of or went to for quite a long time. Whenever I needed anything, the first place I looked was the Port Azure shopping mall. She had everything a newcomer to the grid could need or want... furniture, houses, a few clothes, and some of the most marvelous scripted goodies a person could use. Even after I was better acquainted with the grid, I almost always went to Port Azure to look for something I needed before I went anywhere else. Everything she made was excellent quality.
When I acquired my first little homestead lot, I went searching for the perfect low prim house that looked good yet fit on my tiny parcel. After rejecting one house after another, I finally settled on her Small Beach House model. It was perfect for my needs... it fit the lot, had large bay windows, three stories, and it even had the neatest little scripted house controller, which seemed a very novel feature to me at the time and still remains as such. When I had some problems getting the rez box to work correctly, I contacted Tasha for the first time to ask what I should do to set up the house. She was very helpful... instead of just telling me how to get the doors to stay put where they belonged, she re-packaged the house with an updated version of her rez script and told me to tell her if I had any problems with the new one. After that, I would often contact her just to visit whenever I saw her online. I was amazed by how knowledgeable and helpful she was about pretty much everything.
Eventually, I outgrew my little homestead and began to look for a new place to settle down. I couldn't just go out and rent a sim like most people did because on my very limited student's income I could not justify spending the money for even an inexpensive one, and my multiple attempts to set up a sim on my own computer were dismal failures. One day I was talking to her about my dilemma, and she told me to come out to Port Azure because she would give me 1/4 of a sim free of charge. Needless to say, I was very excited and surprised at such a kind and generous offer. When I went to get settled in, I was even more surprised when she did not even parcel off the land I was to use... she just told me to use about 1/4 of the sim, and her only rule was: "Get along with the neighbors." She told me to let her know anytime the sim was down or having problems and made it clear that it was no trouble at all for her to fix the issues that came up.
Later, when she found out that I was interested in making boat scripts, she gave me several boats that she had made and shared all the tips and workarounds to problems and little technicalities that I would need to be successful in my projects. She even told me that if I made any good racers, she'd set up a boat racing sim - complete with a race timer system that she had made for a car race track. She was always like that - sharing any knowledge and resources that she had. She was always so kind and generous, and I always felt bad that the only way I could pay her back was to thank her and try to be as good a friend to her as I could.
A few months after I moved into that little 1/4 sim piece of Port Azure, she told me about a new OpenSim project that she was working on. She offered to give me the server space for running four regions if I'd help her test her new OpenSim project as an end-user. I never did end up doing a whole lot with those sims, but it was loads of fun having them available to tinker with. Her generous character always made a deep impression on me.
When I had to take an extended time away due to family needs, she was entirely understanding. She repeatedly told me not to worry about testing the software or rush back sooner than I ought to, because family must always come first.
She was always like that: sweet, generous, kind, resourceful, patient, and supportive. She was one of the best and most trusted friends I've ever had here or anywhere else, and I'll always cherish the memories of the wonderful times we enjoyed together. Joe Schmidt
Thanks Tasha for helping to make OSgrid a place worth visiting ( and a reason for staying ).
