Hi I'm new...

Thought I would give osgrid a go - just tryuing to figure out how to run my own region so you will no doubt get loads of posts from me in the future.

I was just going to rent a dedicated server to try it out so anybody got any tips?

Whats easier? Windows or Linux? ( Linux servers are a bit cheaper - but I usually work in windows )
What sort of spec server do i need?

I would like to run a small region of no more than 16 sims comprising 8 water only and 8 "lower prim" sims

Any tips welcome

Best regards

Max xx

I would be most curious on some server specs for a 16 sim setup, that be a lot of land
\
a region is a sim? or is a region considered multiple sims.

I thought region /sim = same thing.

while asking I run a mysql server on a seperate machine what type of specs should we look at there . I guess that really depends on some differant factors.

prolly something on the forums in a rush off to work
cu

I've seen a few posts on specs and it seems as if the answer always starts with a disclaimer related to your plans for the regions. That is a sensible answer as no one knows what expected use will be. For example, if you want to run 16 sims and all 16 will be designed as full sims with average use then the specs will be different then if you want 16 sims but 8 of them will be mostly openspace.

Unless you have a serious business plan model for a project I would suggest going small and getting a good feel for what you are planning on doing and what horsepower that will take. If you want to outsource your box look for a provider that will let you scale up without penalty.

Right now I have four regions and grid on a Dell PowerEdge server that runs well for me and a few others. If I add anymore regions I have an old but fully loaded Pavillion that will run two more. After that, I am pretty much resigned to moving the entire network out of my home office and onto something outsourced.

LOL yeah - start small I was getting a bit carried away.

I've modified my plans to a simple 3x3 region, 1 full sim, 4 low prim sims an 4 water only - I'm just waiting to get some ports opened then I will get started :) Lets see if the little ubuntu box can handle that

Max

Well it runs them - but they are empty and crash every few minutes so I figure you need more server power to run more sims... who would have thought?

I can't speak to the best specs for a server connected to the grid, but I can offer some (hopefully useful) data:

I have sucessfully run an opensim with 5 regions on these computers:

an old Latitude 840 laptop that has 1.2 gh pentium 4 cpu, 1G memory, 32M of video memory

a MacMini with 1.83 GH intel core 2 cpu, 1 G memory, 64M of video memory (run on the WinXP side of Bootcamp)

a new Macbook Pro with 2.4 GH intel core 2 duo cpu, 2G memory, and 256M video memory (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M)
(likewise run on the WinXP side of Bootcamp)

I think the significant thing is that the old 840 latitude did ok with it's little resourcea and power. Of course there was no heavy avatar traffic which I am sure would bog things down. But I think this gives an idea of the lower limits of the range that will work.

(For those unfamiliar with Mac and Bootcamp, Bootcamp creates a partition on a Mac where Windows XP can be run so you can run Windows software on Apple hardware.)

Thank you for your kind attention,
JG

The bottleneck on any server used for OpenSim is almost always the avalibility of RAM. As such I have added a couple of numbers below that you may wish to consider.......

Basic Linux Installation : ~12Mb
Basic Windows Installation : ~200MB
RAM per EMPTY region : ~20MB (this covers the listener, the event queue, etc)

You then need to set aside enough RAM to be able to handle the prims you want to have. On a adverage set of prims (mix of standard boxes, sculpties and complex shapes) the numbers are ~18 prims per Mb.

Please remember these are rough numbers as there are so many variable involved it;s diffcult to get to more accurate. However these numbers were gained using testing of PXE's own regions onthe OSGrid.

Hope they help

So one maxed-out region of 45,000 prims would take 2,500Mb
on XP that would be 2,720MB RAM used?

an SL style 15,000 prim region would be 834Mb + 220 = 1054Mb (approx 1G each region)?

Thanks for helping!
