Well, like the subject says, I'd like to gather some opinions on mega regions. Do you like them? I know it's awesome to be able to wander/fly around without the hassle of sim crossings, but the Tree module does not work on them, and you cannot adjust the water height. These are two things I know about - there may be more.

I really like plant life, so the Tree module is a huge asset to me.

I am thinking my workflow should be to create my regions, terraform and then let the Trees grow for a week or so, all with the regions seperate.

Then freeze the copses and remove whatever errant trees I need to from the future building areas, and then create the mega and do my building.

Does anyone see any drawbacks to that approach?

-This is for a stand alone, by the way... in case that matters.

Thanks!

Pak

Last time I heard (quite a while ago) trees would only grow in the SW region properly on a mega region. In other regions they would use the heightmap of the SW region so trees would grow underground/overground. I'm not sure if this has changed since. If not then growing trees on a mega would be messy to say the least. Also terraforming in-world on any of the regions other than the SW region would be painfully slow (again that may have been fixed, I'm not sure.

This should work ok provided you can combine the regions successfully

No problem at all with a standalone. And in saying that, though I'm not an advocate of it, (I'm opensim through and through) you may be better off looking at Aurora sim (http://aurora-sim.org/). I must add that I have never used it, but only looked at the feature list and apparently supports better mega regions.

Heyas!

Personally, although I currently don't have one connected to the grid - I really like megaregions. Even with their quirks.

Although they can be a bit of a pain to script for on certain things, you really can't beat them for creating huge worlds that seem never ending on a budget that definitely can't be beat :D

I don't see any issues with your approach to 'growing your sims' before combining them. Just be sure to save the .oar files of each one before you do just in case. That is an awful long time of waiting and pruning to have one or more of them flake out on you and have all that time gone. Good rule of thumb anyway - Don't forget to backup!

If you decide to do it - be sure to let us know. I'd like to visit a well forested mega! :)

Take care,
- Hap

Thanks for the feedback, Adelle and Haplo. I'm interested to hear other opinions if there's anything that has not been discussed so far.

Adelle, thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out.

Haplo, thanks for the reminder to make oars. I can't tell you how many hours and nice works I have lost due to that, but I never seem to think to back up my private stand alone stuff. LOL~ The sims I have on the OSGrid ARE backed up, but not my home stuff... Well, I will make a point of doing that from now on... I hope~

:)

Has the issue of seeing two megas next to each other been resolved?

Boater and I merged our megas to blend them. Both megas run on different servers.
But when we set INI to make them megas neither of us can see the others.
Has this been fixed now?
