After I checked out the news on
http://ugotrade.com and heard many people talking about how Linden wants to support Opensim, I kept wondering about a certain thing; How would it be like if people from Linden Lab could actually join the opensim project and help with its coding and development their selves (such as bug fixes but mainly implementations)?
The reason I believe it would be great if willing people from LL would help with OS is mainly one reason: Alongside having more people who help out in total, they are the ones who know the SL server technology best and how they programed their own server side for the main grid. If any of them would be willing to help they could probably implement in just a few days things we are trying to implement in months as they know how it all works much more then we can. Even if it's hard for me to imagine Lindens working with us just out of their interest to help with this open server side, I think it's certainly worth a try.
Of course now, even if Linden actively supports Opensim there is still the issue of it technically being a competitive system to them, so of course many lindens probably don't have such nice feelings for opensim. I seen Lindens which are interested in SL and related external technologies however, and I think some of them who know the way their server side is programmed could try to help us and get over the fact we will be taking some people from their grid and the rest. Just think of the technical information they could give us... of course as long as their boss allows them to give some of their secrets out to opensim.
My main question is if we should or should not try to contact and invite Lindens (of course those who are interested in Opensim) into helping out their selves with what they know. What do you think, would that be a good idea and help implementations and other fixes progress faster? Do we have any chance to find Lindens with clean thoughts that would be willing to help us directly in parallel with their job on the original SL?
