Keep the training material related in some way to OSGrid and OpenSIM or tools that you would use externally to opensim such as image editors and database tools etc... but ultimately the material presented benefits OpenSIM and OSGrid.

I went to http://www.osgrid.org/index.php/downloads which displays
Quote:
Simulator Software This software allows you to run your own region connected to OSGrid, providing you can host it. We use the official OpenSimulator server software, and have customised it for easy use on OSGrid.

Current Release
Download: OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.7.1.dev.4ac5809 - [zip] [24.6mb] 01-05-2011
built from OpenSimulator git hash : 4ac58093bf7fd89c473be259c0a6ca8524879245
(source code only tar.gz/zip)

Previous Release
Download: OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.7.1.dev.25ecd62 - [24.6mb] 12-22-2010
built from OpenSimulator git hash : 25ecd62b1feed16d12d6f5e5ef00bddf7dbf0547
(source code only tar.gz/zip)

example ini files : OpenSim.ini - GridCommon.ini - FlotsamCache.ini

I downloaded OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.7.1.dev.4ac5809 - [zip] [24.6mb] 01-05-2011 and unzipped it into C:/OpenSim .

I'm running Windows XP.

I'd like to see if I can run a region and connect it to OSGrid.

I see various old instructions of varying apparent merit at various places on the web, but nothing that seems like a current, complete set of instructions.

What's the rest of the process?

This thread should probably be moved because this is not really a tutorial but....
Its easy because the package you downloaded is configured to connect to OSgrid without any changes.
Just open Bin folder and click on Opensim.exe and follow the prompts.
Just make sure you have all your ducks in a row first, have the following info ready ...
* User Name: (your OSgrid avatar name)[First name] [Last name]
* External Host Name: (go here for this) http://www.myipaddress.com
* Region Name I Want: (dream up a unique name for your region)
* RegionLocation I want: (go here to find a vacancy) http://www.osgrid.org/index.php/opencoordinates
* Port 9000
Watch the console closely as it asks you questions, all other questions can be just Entered as default( hit enter to accept the default) if you like. (Region uuid etc)
Any firewalls must be set to allow Opensim.exe to allow access and act as a server
port 9000 udp and tcp must also be allowed access thru your firewalls
your router must be set to allow port forwarding of port 9000udp and 9000tcp, you may need to google your router model to get specific instructions re this and loopback issues. Some routers have been listed on this forum already see here http://forums.osgrid.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2283&hilit=list+of+routers

(lol google your router :lol: )

Thanks. This was exactly what I was looking for. The instructions were clear enough and worked fine. I was not expecting it to be so easy.

Hi Cam :)

I've downloaded this;
Current Release
Download: OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.7.2.dev.a2f034c - [zip] [25.9mb] 05-14-2011
built from OpenSimulator git hash : a2f034c5546880215baae53184e591b2e4fd223f : [r/15509]

I followed the instructions you give above but ...

I do not have a router. I want to connect directly from my pc. I have a static IP address.

When I log in, I can see my sim on the map, but cannot TP to it. I get this message;
Teleport failed: Service request failed: The operation has timed out.

Is there anything else I have to do?

Selea

Greetings,
what does mean "directly to my PC"? Is there an ethernet cable with RJ45 connected directly to your PC? If there is a kind of modem there can be still a problem with the loopback ...

Cheers, Bo

Hello,
the modem may be a kind of router. Clear sign of a loopaback problem is that others may enter your sim (for a while before they crash) but you not.

There are some loopback utilities for windows please click the loopback link in my previous post.

Cheers, Bo

Selea, you should be good to go as long as your region port is open to UDP and your http_listener port open to TCP on the computer running opensim. They can both be the same port for your first default region if you want, and you can just allow both TCP and UDP through your firewall for that port number.

If you dont have a firewall enabled then I guess you would check your modem config.

Connecting an OpenSim server direct as you are doing should be the easiest and least problematic way to do it, so if you still can't get in, you are misconfigured somewhere. Use 0.0.0.0 for internal IP in Regions.ini and of course your static IP for external (not SYSTEMIP).

I have never heard of loopback issues concerning only the modem, thought it was only a router issue but you should look for an enable loopback setting in your modem just in case.

Stuff like CISCO EPC2425 is presented by some cable companies as a "modem" although it is more router...

Cheers, Bo
