During the process of setting up my first regions and getting it wrong many times I inadvertently left a whole bunch of ghost regions all over the grid. Now I could ask the devs to get rid of them but then I thought maybe it was better for me to clean up after myself and leave the devs to concentrate on what they do best - making os better and better :)

Because I deleted the region files I had to manually recreate temporary regions so I could delete them using the region UUID.

Here's how i did it - I found it easier to have two terminals open, one with the # prompt and one running opensim ( frequent retstarts required )

1. Use the region list on osgrid.org to find my ghost regions, where I was able to get the UUID from the information panel.
2. Change to the regions folder " # cd opensim/bin/Regions "
3. Copy one of the region files to make a temp file " # cp myregion.xml mytempregion.xml "
4. Then edit the temp file " # pico mytempregion.xml "
5. In the temp file paste the UUID from your ghost region, change the name to something like "removeme" and set some locations coords, I used "30303", "30303" - nb. to paste into ssh use " Shift + Insert " - remeber to use a spare port
6. Now restart your OpenSim ( shutdown, the # mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe "
7. When you show regions, you should now see your temp region
8. Now issue the "remove-region removeme" command and this should remove the region from the grid
9. Delete your temp file, or repeat steps 4 to 8 for all your ghost regions ( in my case i had to do this 18 times )

And finally, give yourself a pat on the back for being a nice tidy region administrator :)

Max

Bravo!
And thanx for setting me straight.
There sits remove-region right above delete-region in the
help listing from console.
/me kicks self
Did you run across some documentation somewhere on the remove-region command?
The wiki doesn't mention either delete-region or remove-region on the Server Commands page
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Server_Commands
I suppose they are both generic enough to be self-explanatory
/me kicks self again
Nice touch was the Shift-Insert step. I still get a kick out of right-click paste in Windows while I'm in a PuTTY [ssh] session. For those few small moments I've commandeered M$ and turned it into an X session for copy-paste :P

LOL, no I figured it out by trial and error - Shift + Insert is something linux noobs like me may not know - saves typing out those UUIDs :)

A very useful post - many thanks, Max.

Perhaps threads like this should become 'stickies' (always at the top of the first page, the thread tidied up occasionally to remove posts of no permanent interest (like this one!))? That would help them to be visible to people coming here for the first time.

I would be delighted to have a sticky thread - at least I would feel like I was contributing even if it was only in a very small way :)

Well, y'all know by now I'm in these Forums as much as y'all are in IRC :)
Bookmarked this thread so I can just redirect future queries to this thread.

I could never get the hang of IRC... does it involve computers in some way?

Thanks!

Did you give yourself the pat on the back at the end of the procedure?

Max ;-)

Well I believe Nebadon said he has removed the UUID's from the public region lists. He will have to confirm this. So, this may not be possible anymore if you lost the region's UUID.

Hopefully they are coming up with a way to clean these up....sure alot out there these days!
