whats the latest on database migrations..?? if mysql is getting to slow, maybe switch to (MS)SQL Server witch is WAY faster....

OSGRID login page:

We are taking a new strategy for database migration, as you know Osgrid is the largest Opensimulator grid with large amounts of data which. unfortunately, the standard mysql tools can be very slow. So we are studying other possibilities for migration of the databases with other tools that are much more efficient. In concept: we will backup the grid in the background keeping the grid online. We decided to change the migration tactics so that our residents can continue to use the grid during their end-of-year holiday
Some of you may experience failed teleports and simulator errors on startup for the next 24 hours. This is because of the time it takes new dns records to be cached around the world. Some common solutions are to flush dns cache or change dns servers to one that is current.

SQL Server may be faster, but the licensing would probably be about the same as the total current OSG hardware monthly cost. SQL Server Express is a freebie but it has a lot of limitations; no way it would handle the amount of data OSG has in assets.

I assume that the main servers are running on Windows, then? MaridDB would probably be more than capable, and is fully SQL compatible, meaning a change of server rather than a migration.

EDIT: Dunno if it's Linux only, though.
