Hey there.

I came to this forum a while ago, and had some great success with the answers I was looking for... so I decided to try again. This time with a much bigger issue.

First some background.
I am working at the University of Alberta, as a Graduate student on a research project that involves the creation of an OpenSim replica of our campus. The research is looking into the possibility of having students attend a "virtual orientation" from afar, and then seeing how well they acclimatize themselves when they actually get here, compared to those who don't.

We had out first run last year, but had difficulty getting many students to sign up, because the process for setting up the SL viewer to connect to our OpenSim server was beyond the skill level of the average high school student (kind of dis-concerning in and of itself for the abilities of a generation of students, of course, but what can I do... our stats are our stats)
Even getting them to type the info into a grid selector turned out to be too much.

We cannot afford to lose students who are potentially part of our research because of issues like this, so we are looking at any avenue to remedy them.

Fast forward to this year and because of the recent abandonment of the SL viewer from the OpenSim community, I have come to learn that a viewer can be compiled by someone with a certain level of expertise (that I do not have)... to do the kind of thing we need done. That is, we need to create an installer that will install a viewer that will automatically be set-up to connect to our OpenSim Grid by default.

The viewer would need to be Mesh compatible, because we have many many mesh models in our GRID.
We'd also like to set some of the debug settings to slightly different amounts, if possible, by default... but this is luxury stuff.

So. To summarize

We would like someone to compile a viewer for us. It must do the following:
- Be set to connect to our opensim grid by default
- shows our webpage on the home screen
- is able to render Mesh objects
- bonus: has a few debug settings set to new defaults, and certain toolbar elements are hidden by default (as clean a UI as possible)
- double bonus: A Mac version

This being a funded research project, we may actually be able to pay for such work to be done, but nothing too crazy, as we are on a limited budget. So, in return for your efforts, we can offer nominal compensation, to be negotiated before the project starts.

We also have a limited time window, and would need it ready to go by mid-march.

If you are up to the task, or know someone who is... please do not hesitate to contact myself by replying here, or PM'ing me, or emailing eadejong@ualberta dot ca

Thank you for your time!

It is not really matter of browser forking (source code modifying). Unless you want very customized look.

All this can be done by config files modification. If you have some budget for that, and no volunteers you can just hire one of viewer devs to have this done for you.

Eric, i think u need to offer some money, especially while there is a deadline. I think 100-200 USD could do it for you.

Or try it yourself. The basic settings can be done in files:
{L_CODE}:
app_settings/grids.fallback.xml
app_settings/settings.xml
app_settings/

for Firestorm.

The most easy way (if you don't want to modify the installer) is change values in these files and ask students to unpack it into Firstorm folder. Of course. for USD 200 i would expect someone to create a custom installer for you.

Alright. I would happily offer US$150 for someone to do this... spread the word! :)

Asking students to unpack the setting files is too much for them... sadly
We need a one time/one step install.

You could simply look for a custom installer that you could distribute that will run the regular windows installer to install FS (or whatever veiwer you choose) and then overwrite the config files. It's been a long time since I used Windows at home, but I'm sure they are out there for much less than you are offering, and should be easy to configure for distributing.

EDIT: At a pinch you could write a batch file to do it.

I am sure if you will post the job offer on Fire or Dolpin forum you will get qualified help and quality for that.

Of course the less money you will offer the more trouble can be with it.

Is there an opensimulator develepors mail list? That would be a good place to post.

The lead of the Firestorm/phoenix team responded to my request, but sadly said they could not help because they are overwhelmed with these types of requests quite often.

Fulfilling one would, in her words, "open the flood gates"

I understand... sadly.

I'll inquire about a custom installer, perhaps.

Yes i know about this situation. I just hoped the amount could be enough.

You can also try users mailist
http://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/opensim-users

there are many people who are actually involved with grids...
