Hi,
This bit is sad
{L_QUOTE}:
Even getting them to type the info into a grid selector turned out to be too much.

Makes you wonder how they will negotiate the UI, are they motivated?
If they are then there is some workaround you can apply, firstly the login screen where you want your webpage to show up is done by pointing the viewer login screen to a particular URL (you suggest your webpage) so if the web url is specified in the default setup the viewer will open with that site as a background.
These students would have to know their way around a computer, If you can get them to change 2 files in the installed viewer then the viewer will configure itself, first the app_settings/default_grids.xml to include your grid nick, gridname, loginURI and loginpage url etc. Add this block as the first grid on the list, change mygrid for your grid and mygrid.com:8002 to your gridlogin URI, and loginpage is your website and also whatever helpers you might have in place of mywebpage.com

app_settings/default_grids.xml
{L_CODE}:
    <!-- My Grid -->
            <map>
              <key>gridnick</key><string>mygrid</string>
              <key>gridname</key><string>MyGrid</string>
              <key>platform</key><string>OpenSim</string>
              <key>loginuri</key><string>http://mygrid.com:8002</string>
              <key>loginpage</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com</string>
              <key>helperuri</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com/</string>
              <key>website</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com/</string>
              <key>support</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com/</string>
              <key>register</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com</string>
              <key>password</key><string>http://www.mywebpage.com</string>
              <key>version</key><string>0</string>
            </map>

and in the same folder app_settings open settings.xml and find the line about line 1500

app_settings/settings.xml
{L_CODE}:
  <key>DefaultGrid</key>
  <map>
    <key>Comment</key>
    <string>Nickname of the default grid</string>
    <key>Persist</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>Type</key>
    <string>String</string>
    <key>Value</key>
    <string>osgrid</string>
  </map>

and change <string>osgrid</string> to <string>YourGridNick</string> where YourGridNick is the same as the nick you put into default_grids.xml
this file points to the details in the default_grids.xml and tells the viewer to load the default grid which will be your grid pointing to your loginURI and splash screen will be your webpage.

If this works for you then I suggest creating these 2 modified files (tested that work) and issue the files as a "crack for the game" without this crack they cannot get into your simulator. (just a bit of psychology) rather than having the students mess with the file edit. all they do is drag the 2 files into the app_settings folder, then restart the viewer.
As for the other mods you want, thats all a bit beyond me I admit, I hope I have been some help.

No wonder, it is for them homework. Any lil problem (they can use as an excuse to reject it) is strongly welcome and the whole project may be evaluated as fail for that...

Hmmm... this is a interesting idea. The "Crack" to get the game to work.

I may consider it.
Thank you for the write-up as well. Very helpful.

As someone working towards an PhD in Educational Psychology, I can agree that the bit you quoted is scary as well.

The future (in our neck of the woods, at least) is a society of end-users.
A society where no-one cares what's going on "behind the scenes" of their iPhone but they love to complain when it doesn't work.
