Now that LL from that "other grid" have decided to make changes to their TPV policy, which effectively cuts the ties with Opensim, isn't it about time that Opensim had it's ok dedicated viewer, without all the SL splash screen nonsense, and all the left over hangups from SL, such as SL search, teleport URLS no longer being called SLURS etc?

In the beginning I can understand why all these things were kept as parity was being maintained with SL, especially as the viewer is based on LL code, but with this new change coming soon, isn't it time WE in Opensim land cut the ties to LL?

If I could code I would begin that project now with earnest, sadly I can't, but I am hoping that this ultimately will represent something good in the future.

What are your thoughts?

The time seems well overdue, Justin. A read through the Town Hall meeting from a week ago will show you the complexity of the situation.

Ok Nova, thank you for that. Took a bit of reading but struggled through. So bascially just playing a wait and see game with the other viewer devs.

As Armin seems committed to Opensim, may be he will be our saviour :)

If any wishes a viewer that runs on Apple, Linux and Windows and is being updated with latest code, Exodus viewer seems a good option!

Just downloaded it and tried it, no grid manager and is designed mainly for SL as a combat viewer, so it doesn't seem a real candidate for a mainstream opensim viewer.

The Firestorm team will fork their viewer soon to make an Opensim friendly version. Work has been started by Armin to this effect in latest download (Version v4.1.1.28744). It's most likely that Zen, Teapot and Kokura will also produce versions to connect to Opensim after Pathfinding goes mainstream on the Linden grid....(plus the older V1 viewers can still connect here)...so plenty of choice still for everyone.

For now, until something better comes along ... I'd recommend the Latest release of the Singularity Viewer.
I've had no issues with it.

Well, no issues until recently since getting my simulator back up and running after an extended absence.
I run a large region that only Singularity was capable of handling (up to 8192x8192) which translates to about 25 square miles.
But cut back to what seems to be an allowable 16 square miles (half the size) maximum.

It seems recent changes to Singularity are causing a very nasty system crash when attempting to log out.
So I'm forced to use the Task Manager to "End Process" to safely exit.

We could certainly use a dedicated viewer capable of handling large regions while allowing for Grid selection and intergrid teleportation between OSGrid and others who run their own Standalone Hypergrid connected sims.

Use Firestorm or one of the recent Singularity alphas
