[2018/12/29 11:01] Caro Fayray: hey izzie
[2018/12/29 11:01] albertlr Landar: I arranged all that music for a programmer friend of my that was making a Advent Calendar for Christmas release.
[2018/12/29 11:01] Koni Lanzius: yes Happy New Year Albirtir
[2018/12/29 11:01] Caro Fayray: hey tiggs
[2018/12/29 11:01] cilla teebrook whispers: hey tiggs
[2018/12/29 11:01] albertlr Landar: I ended up in doing like 40 carols but he only used 25 of them.
[2018/12/29 11:01] Caro Fayray: wow
[2018/12/29 11:01] albertlr Landar: It would play a carol each day of the Calendar.
[2018/12/29 11:02] Koni Lanzius: are there new ones?
[2018/12/29 11:02] Caro Fayray: nice to have a choice tho
[2018/12/29 11:02] Koni Lanzius: hey Tiggs
[2018/12/29 11:02] Caro Fayray: ah ok
[2018/12/29 11:02] albertlr Landar: I really should go back and see if there are more public domain carols out there.
[2018/12/29 11:02] Caro Fayray: probnot popular with kids
[2018/12/29 11:02] Caro Fayray: they prefer chocs
[2018/12/29 11:02] albertlr Landar: And that brings me to the news I wanted to share this week.
[2018/12/29 11:03] whippin tavgo: oh hi tiggs
[2018/12/29 11:03] whippin tavgo: |!¤*'~``~'*¤!| gιggℓεs |!¤*'~``~'*¤!|
[2018/12/29 11:03] albertlr Landar: This is in regards to public domain works, opensource and copy rights.
[2018/12/29 11:03] albertlr Landar: does everyone understand the differences between those.
[2018/12/29 11:03] paela.argus @login.sunlight-grid.org: =)
[2018/12/29 11:03] Koni Lanzius: I read something about that
[2018/12/29 11:03] Caro Fayray: mmm...i think but maybe not
[2018/12/29 11:03] albertlr Landar: First Diva made an announcement about the viewer project.
[2018/12/29 11:04] Caro Fayray: help I'm a sandwich for paelas
[2018/12/29 11:04] albertlr Landar: Seems they were going to work on the graphics engine that Malanie had been working on for a new Opensim viewer
[2018/12/29 11:04] Koni Lanzius: I dont have all that clear Albirir
[2018/12/29 11:04] whippin tavgo: hee hee caro
[2018/12/29 11:04] TIGGS Beaumont: <---grins
[2018/12/29 11:04] TIGGS Beaumont: *standing safely off laps I hope
[2018/12/29 11:04] albertlr Landar: But they ran into a problem.
[2018/12/29 11:04] Koni Lanzius: oh?
[2018/12/29 11:04] Caro Fayray: i read that
[2018/12/29 11:04] Koni Lanzius: what was the problem?
[2018/12/29 11:04] paela argus: speaking with ubit about the new viewer planned and that affray me
[2018/12/29 11:05] albertlr Landar: Seems that the people that hold the rights to the UnReal Graphics, would require Grid owners to pay a royalty to use it.
[2018/12/29 11:05] Koni Lanzius: oh lordy
[2018/12/29 11:05] albertlr Landar: That that makes it not usable for the opensource viewer they want to make.
[2018/12/29 11:05] Koni Lanzius: is there an alternative/
[2018/12/29 11:05] Caro Fayray: mmm that doesnt sound right
[2018/12/29 11:05] albertlr Landar: So they are looking at other graphics engines. Two that would not require a royalty.
[2018/12/29 11:06] Koni Lanzius: oh good
[2018/12/29 11:06] albertlr Landar: So its not stopped just going to look at other options.
[2018/12/29 11:06] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:06] Koni Lanzius: so there are others
[2018/12/29 11:06] albertlr Landar: Yea
[2018/12/29 11:06] albertlr Landar: Two very good candidates she said.
[2018/12/29 11:06] Koni Lanzius: awesome
[2018/12/29 11:06] paela argus: just for make all in right think if the new viewer use a new protocol login like ubit have said to me is osgrid can not allow it because we can not make in place a new system login
[2018/12/29 11:06] paela argus: :-o
[2018/12/29 11:06] albertlr Landar: I wish I still have the comments she said, but it is in the developers newletter that goes out to those that subscribe to it.
[2018/12/29 11:07] albertlr Landar: But back to copyright.
[2018/12/29 11:07] albertlr Landar: For years when a person, say a photographers, a composer, a writer created an original work of art.
[2018/12/29 11:07] albertlr Landar: They had an automatic copyright on that work for 50 years.
[2018/12/29 11:08] albertlr Landar: Meaning they could control who used it, and any changes to it during those 50 years.
[2018/12/29 11:08] albertlr Landar: But after those 50 years, anyone was able to use it without having to pay for it.
[2018/12/29 11:08] albertlr Landar: they could also borrow from it, and modify it for their own use.
[2018/12/29 11:09] albertlr Landar: This provided a way for art to grow. and change over time.
[2018/12/29 11:09] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:09] albertlr Landar: But in 1999 the Disney company, and not Walt Disney, but the company decided that they wanted to control Mickey Mouse longer than 50 years.
[2018/12/29 11:09] Koni Lanzius: what all has the copyrights expired? I assumed it was a few dusty old books and songs
[2018/12/29 11:09] albertlr Landar: So they lobbied Congress, probably bribed congress to change the law.
[2018/12/29 11:10] albertlr Landar: And they froze all art from going to the public for 20 additional years.
[2018/12/29 11:10] albertlr Landar: Thus extending the copy right time from 50 years to 20 years more.
[2018/12/29 11:10] albertlr Landar: That is call greed.
[2018/12/29 11:10] Koni Lanzius: yea
[2018/12/29 11:10] paela argus: if i remember Disney is more french of usa
[2018/12/29 11:10] albertlr Landar: That was my opinion then and still is.
[2018/12/29 11:10] Caro Fayray: is this just the US or everywhere?
[2018/12/29 11:10] albertlr Landar: but that law has is now expiring.
[2018/12/29 11:11] albertlr Landar: In 2019 for the first time in 20 years things from the past will now be going into the public domain for a change.
[2018/12/29 11:11] paela argus: in france is 70 years caro :)
[2018/12/29 11:11] Koni Lanzius: hi Jumungus
[2018/12/29 11:11] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:11] albertlr Landar: So things feom 1923 will be in the public domain for the first time
[2018/12/29 11:11] albertlr Landar: and each year going forward so will others, 1924 in 2020. 1925 in 2012, etc.
[2018/12/29 11:11] Jumungus Knox: hi koni
[2018/12/29 11:11] albertlr Landar: etc.
[2018/12/29 11:11] Caro Fayray: I thought it was lifetime and when u die it goes into your estate
[2018/12/29 11:12] paela argus: depending if you paid for reset the copyright
[2018/12/29 11:12] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:12] albertlr Landar: Now when I made arrangements of those Christmas Carols I made those only on Carols there were already in the public domain.
[2018/12/29 11:12] albertlr Landar: So those are all older carols, ones that were written before 1923.
[2018/12/29 11:12] Koni Lanzius: i see
[2018/12/29 11:13] albertlr Landar: Other wise I would have to pay royalties to probably a publishing company.
[2018/12/29 11:13] Caro Fayray: k yes
[2018/12/29 11:13] albertlr Landar: When you hear music on the radio, a radio station has to maintain logs of the music they pay.
[2018/12/29 11:13] paela argus: ya 120 eu just for the main stream of os-radio hahah
[2018/12/29 11:13] paela argus: per month
[2018/12/29 11:14] albertlr Landar: And they have to pay royalties to companies that hold the rights to the original music.
[2018/12/29 11:14] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:14] albertlr Landar: and the companies pay some of those funds to the composers or their families.
[2018/12/29 11:14] albertlr Landar: Now I am all for that, as it pays the original creators for their works.
[2018/12/29 11:14] Stewie Allen is Online
[2018/12/29 11:15] albertlr Landar: But after a certain time, the works need to go into the public domain so everyone can use they as they see fit.
[2018/12/29 11:15] paela argus: in france is more complicated state take 60 % of royalites :(-
[2018/12/29 11:15] albertlr Landar: That is finally going to happen next year.
[2018/12/29 11:15] albertlr Landar: And as paela mentions the way the copyrights work is difference in each country.
[2018/12/29 11:16] albertlr Landar: However each country tries to respect the others countries copyright claims.
[2018/12/29 11:16] Mirror Amorasi is Online
[2018/12/29 11:16] albertlr Landar: So we can play new French music here while still also respecting their copyright claims.
[2018/12/29 11:16] paela argus: -*- loOl -*-
[2018/12/29 11:16] paela argus: normally all companies take for royalitie send to other country of where is singer but is normally
[2018/12/29 11:17] albertlr Landar: That is how it works all around the world, except in such countries such as Russia, China, etc.
[2018/12/29 11:17] Koni Lanzius: as long as it is within this group of expired copyright items, right?
[2018/12/29 11:17] TIGGS Beaumont: *raises hand
[2018/12/29 11:17] albertlr Landar: So lots of stealing going on there in some countries (Russia, China, etc.) . But that is another topic.
[2018/12/29 11:17] albertlr Landar: Sure Tiggs.
[2018/12/29 11:17] paela argus: no u can not without paid albert
[2018/12/29 11:17] paela argus: the streaming need to be used in private
[2018/12/29 11:17] paela argus: or u need paid royalitie french
[2018/12/29 11:17] albertlr Landar: I agree paela
[2018/12/29 11:17] TIGGS Beaumont: Koni actually asked the question
[2018/12/29 11:17] albertlr Landar: that is how it works.
[2018/12/29 11:17] TIGGS Beaumont: Thank you Koni
[2018/12/29 11:18] Koni Lanzius: :)
[2018/12/29 11:18] albertlr Landar: ok
[2018/12/29 11:18] albertlr Landar: Koni, whats the question.
[2018/12/29 11:18] TIGGS Beaumont: so we actually have no dominion over music in here at all then?
[2018/12/29 11:18] TIGGS Beaumont: okay
[2018/12/29 11:18] TIGGS Beaumont: we cannot use streams on our lands?
[2018/12/29 11:18] Koni Lanzius: oni Lanzius: as long as it is within this group of expired copyright items, right?
[2018/12/29 11:18] paela argus: normally any deejay play music need to pay royalitie
[2018/12/29 11:18] paela argus: is normally
[2018/12/29 11:19] albertlr Landar: When you are using it for private use its not usually a problem.
[2018/12/29 11:19] Foxx Bode: none.
[2018/12/29 11:19] Koni Lanzius: i guess what I'm wondering is what all is free to use now?
[2018/12/29 11:19] paela argus: ya the stream need use private setup
[2018/12/29 11:19] Jeff Hall: i stream privately my own library; is it fine?
[2018/12/29 11:19] albertlr Landar: And because the groups are so small on grids etc, its not worth the copyright owners time and energy to press copyright claims.
[2018/12/29 11:19] Foxx Bode: yes
[2018/12/29 11:19] Koni Lanzius: oh hey Jeff
[2018/12/29 11:20] albertlr Landar: Technically anything that is under copyright, someone could make a claim on.
[2018/12/29 11:20] Foxx Bode: true, but wont happen unless you have a model on it making money.
[2018/12/29 11:20] paela argus: if u have not website and stream is in private u have not chance the state ask you to paid jeff :)
[2018/12/29 11:20] TIGGS Beaumont: oh geeez we are all criminals
[2018/12/29 11:20] albertlr Landar: Many years ago I composed and made arrangements of music for a midi users group on Compuserve.
[2018/12/29 11:20] albertlr Landar: So did a lot of other users.
[2018/12/29 11:20] Jeff Hall: i simply stream directly from my comp.s library to regions using vlc
[2018/12/29 11:21] cilla teebrook whispers: is Happy Birthday .. still covered in copyright?
[2018/12/29 11:21] paela argus: normally for play music in stream first is u have buy legally the music and paid the royaliti of music streamed
[2018/12/29 11:21] albertlr Landar: A guy made a midi file of his performance of UnChained Melody, a popular song from a movie severaly years back.
[2018/12/29 11:21] Cataplexia Numbers is Offline
[2018/12/29 11:22] albertlr Landar: The Frank Music Company that owned the copyrights sued compuserve for $50,000 for each down load of that song.
[2018/12/29 11:22] whippin tavgo: yikes
[2018/12/29 11:22] Caro Fayray: wow
[2018/12/29 11:22] albertlr Landar: Compuserve then removed all music from its site.
[2018/12/29 11:22] TIGGS Beaumont: wow
[2018/12/29 11:22] albertlr Landar: and settled that suit.
[2018/12/29 11:22] TIGGS Beaumont: but isn't that song from just Post WWII
ANSWER: Maybe but it was till under copyright, the 50 year copyright law.
[2018/12/29 11:22] albertlr Landar: Now that a company that sued.
[2018/12/29 11:22] paela argus: remember mega upload closed for that
[2018/12/29 11:23] paela argus: and is not a company usa
[2018/12/29 11:23] paela argus: :)
[2018/12/29 11:23] albertlr Landar: Ever since we have had the DMCA come up as a result of that.
[2018/12/29 11:23] Caro Fayray: what about the performers that sing here?
[2018/12/29 11:23] albertlr Landar: Which basically said that if a website has copyrighted songs, music, books, or items. And it is made available to the public, and is then notified that it is infact copyrighted. Then it must be removed.
[2018/12/29 11:23] Foxx Bode: thieves, they sing covers....
[2018/12/29 11:24] albertlr Landar: That was to avoid the law suits.
[2018/12/29 11:24] Foxx Bode: all of them... criminals....
[2018/12/29 11:24] Caro Fayray: lol
[2018/12/29 11:24] albertlr Landar: So this does affect everyone.
[2018/12/29 11:24] TIGGS Beaumont: OMG well, we will have entrainment in jail
[2018/12/29 11:25] TIGGS Beaumont: *raises hand
[2018/12/29 11:25] paela argus: not for 50 music played
[2018/12/29 11:25] cilla teebrook whispers: giggles
[2018/12/29 11:25] paela argus: :D
[2018/12/29 11:25] Caro Fayray: so...make everything u use
[2018/12/29 11:25] albertlr Landar: But at the same time the Supreme Court of the US. has ruled that if you purchase a copy right item, and you use it privately, they you have FAIR USE of it.
[2018/12/29 11:25] TIGGS Beaumont: So, since this subject was broached there had to be a reason
[2018/12/29 11:25] albertlr Landar: Also people are allow to make fun or parody of copyrighted things, that is part of the law.
[2018/12/29 11:25] TIGGS Beaumont: Is OSG frowning on having LIVE entertainment as well as DJs?
[2018/12/29 11:26] albertlr Landar: Such as a drama could be made fun of in the public.
[2018/12/29 11:26] albertlr Landar: and not be sued.
[2018/12/29 11:26] Caro Fayray: ok
[2018/12/29 11:26] paela argus: osgrid are not responsive to music played in viewer
[2018/12/29 11:26] albertlr Landar: No just explaining the world, and the US how all this works.
[2018/12/29 11:26] albertlr Landar: Copy Rights can get very complicated.
[2018/12/29 11:27] albertlr Landar: And this applies to open-source things also.
[2018/12/29 11:27] albertlr Landar: Same thing.
[2018/12/29 11:27] Caro Fayray: the streams that are in the websites eg wikis are they all OK then.?
ANSWER: Yes
[2018/12/29 11:27] TIGGS Beaumont: okay so can wear stripes in preparation, because I book LIVE
[2018/12/29 11:27] albertlr Landar: Open-sourced means that the software is open to anyone changing it, and using it without fees or restrictions.
[2018/12/29 11:27] albertlr Landar: Except you can not resell it.
[2018/12/29 11:27] paela argus: for stream a music in website u need paid normally
[2018/12/29 11:28] Caro Fayray: no i meant on land here
[2018/12/29 11:28] albertlr Landar: Yea, you are fine Tiggs. No threats.
[2018/12/29 11:28] TIGGS Beaumont: okayyyy
[2018/12/29 11:28] TIGGS Beaumont: *keeps file in shoe
[2018/12/29 11:28] albertlr Landar: You can stream anything you want into your land.
[2018/12/29 11:28] Caro Fayray: lol
[2018/12/29 11:28] paela argus: the responsible person for music played in viewer is the owner of the stream
[2018/12/29 11:28] Caro Fayray: ok cool
[2018/12/29 11:28] albertlr Landar: Just do not charge money for people to hear it.
[2018/12/29 11:28] Caro Fayray: no i wont lol
[2018/12/29 11:28] TIGGS Beaumont: how about tipping?
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: That is for your efforts not for music.
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: generally.
[2018/12/29 11:29] TIGGS Beaumont: oh not for me
[2018/12/29 11:29] TIGGS Beaumont: for the entertainers
[2018/12/29 11:29] Jeff Hall: good i can keep playing my personal stream without wearing a gun
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: No if someone is singing live, they have their own copyright protections.
[2018/12/29 11:29] Koni Lanzius: heheh
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: Especialy if their music is original.
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: They have legal protections and their own copyrights.
[2018/12/29 11:29] paela argus: in france the royalitie is based in flat rate 1 to 500 listen 120 e 500 to 1000 220 e etc ...
[2018/12/29 11:29] albertlr Landar: No one can legally record them and sell it.
[2018/12/29 11:30] TIGGS Beaumont: and if the entertainers are paid for their performances?
[2018/12/29 11:30] albertlr Landar: But it is up to them if they do it for free.
[2018/12/29 11:30] Mirror Amorasi is Online
[2018/12/29 11:30] albertlr Landar: That is fine, but you still can not legally record them and sell it.
[2018/12/29 11:30] Caro Fayray: so its more about selling it on then
[2018/12/29 11:30] TIGGS Beaumont: okay
[2018/12/29 11:30] TIGGS Beaumont: same same for years
[2018/12/29 11:30] paela argus: paid artist osgrid singer music of other eek
[2018/12/29 11:30] paela argus: -*- loOl -*-
[2018/12/29 11:31] albertlr Landar: And that is also why OSgrid insists that all our free items are original, and that you can not resell it.
[2018/12/29 11:31] Caro Fayray: right
[2018/12/29 11:31] albertlr Landar: Its to protect the creators rights, and avoid DMCA claims.
[2018/12/29 11:31] Jeff Hall: absolutely
[2018/12/29 11:31] paela argus: :-o
[2018/12/29 11:31] paela argus: free can have restrictive permissions
[2018/12/29 11:32] paela argus: example no transfer
[2018/12/29 11:32] Caro Fayray: yes
[2018/12/29 11:32] paela argus: break permissions of a object is a dmca complain too
[2018/12/29 11:32] albertlr Landar: In the real world when someone buys something they do what they want with it, as far as giving it away for reselling.
[2018/12/29 11:32] albertlr Landar: But again that is buying
[2018/12/29 11:32] albertlr Landar: Ebay would be closed down is that was true.
[2018/12/29 11:33] cilla teebrook whispers: GOD?
[2018/12/29 11:33] albertlr Landar: The thing about no transfer is a questionable thing.
[2018/12/29 11:33] paela argus: yes god tool is a debug for proper object created by the creator not for all can kill permissions
[2018/12/29 11:33] albertlr Landar: In real life I can give my dvd's I bought to anyone I wish.
[2018/12/29 11:33] Caro Fayray: i had to use it to change another caros thing
[2018/12/29 11:34] albertlr Landar: as long as I do not duplicate them.
[2018/12/29 11:34] paela argus: no transfer said sharing prohibited
[2018/12/29 11:34] Caro Fayray: so either trans or copy but not both
[2018/12/29 11:34] albertlr Landar: How can people give gifts if there is no transfer in real life.
[2018/12/29 11:34] albertlr Landar: that is not logical.
[2018/12/29 11:34] paela argus: that why have removed my all shop here because no one respect that
[2018/12/29 11:34] albertlr Landar: yes.
[2018/12/29 11:35] albertlr Landar: Restrictions of no copy can be in both real life and in virtual.
[2018/12/29 11:35] Caro Fayray: it happens too here when ppl take oar and then move to somewhere else
[2018/12/29 11:35] paela argus: some think u buy are not transfer in real life too albert :)
[2018/12/29 11:35] paela argus: like a lots of soft
[2018/12/29 11:35] Caro Fayray: everything becomes theirs
[2018/12/29 11:35] albertlr Landar: The no transfer thing was just made up and requested by some of the grids and the developers added that.
[2018/12/29 11:35] paela argus: example windows
[2018/12/29 11:36] albertlr Landar: But that important thing I wanted to bring up. if the release of copy righted things to the public does start again in 2019
[2018/12/29 11:37] albertlr Landar: Something to look forward too.
[2018/12/29 11:37] whippin tavgo: an item does not have to be made by a creator on Osgrid to own such item ...right?
[2018/12/29 11:37] albertlr Landar: no
[2018/12/29 11:37] Jeff Hall: not sure to precisely follow what it means for users albert
[2018/12/29 11:38] albertlr Landar: you can own items from other grids.
[2018/12/29 11:38] paela argus: depending the tos of other grids too warning
[2018/12/29 11:38] albertlr Landar: In fact Kitely will deliver items to you here on OSgrid, if you buy it on their marketplace.
[2018/12/29 11:38] Koni Lanzius: Kitely sells form their grid
[2018/12/29 11:38] Koni Lanzius: :)
[2018/12/29 11:38] whippin tavgo: thought so, a girl had said otherwise
[2018/12/29 11:38] Caro Fayray: u can be the owner of someone else's creation
[2018/12/29 11:38] TIGGS Beaumont: I buy Kitely and they deliver here
[2018/12/29 11:39] albertlr Landar: OSgrid wants to promote the free and open giving of items. But we do respect DMCA claims.
[2018/12/29 11:39] Caro Fayray: the creator is still the original person
[2018/12/29 11:39] Mirror Amorasi is Offline
[2018/12/29 11:39] albertlr Landar: I live near Savannh, GA.
[2018/12/29 11:39] paela argus: :-o
[2018/12/29 11:39] paela argus: i agree with free if copyright and permission is respected
[2018/12/29 11:39] albertlr Landar: And we have a port where foreign items come into our port all the time.
[2018/12/29 11:39] Caro Fayray: me too
[2018/12/29 11:40] albertlr Landar: The customs officials, spend a lot of their time watching for and catching ripp off items coming into the country.
[2018/12/29 11:40] albertlr Landar: That claim to be original expensive items, such as shoes or hand bags.
[2018/12/29 11:40] albertlr Landar: They will seize them at the port and destroy them.
[2018/12/29 11:41] albertlr Landar: if they find they violate Copyrights, Trademark or patent laws
[2018/12/29 11:41] albertlr Landar: So like the DMCA it happens in real life too.
[2018/12/29 11:41] paela argus: some peoples ignore but i will make it sure all understand if a user importing copyboth here and if osgrid not remove that objet with dmca complain we can lost osgrid, or osgrid prohibed in some country that WHY all dmca is looked and that why 2 grids dangerous banned to access too
[2018/12/29 11:42] albertlr Landar: And paela you said you had made some new changes to the website.
