I'm new at this and have been running a stand-along region using the official 0.9.1.1 version of Open Simulator from opensimulator.org (filename is opensim-0.9.1.1.tar.gz). I wanted to try connecting a region to the OSgrid world and I've been reading through the docs on the OSgrid site. One the first things I noticed is the requirement that I use the OSgrid version of open simulator. The recommended download is osgrid-opensim-05222020.v0.9.2.b598573.zip which looks like it's based on a beta release of the official code but it's not clear what the changes are. The download page just says it's been modified to work with OSgrid. Are the changes documented anywhere and is it possible to patch the production version of Open Simulator to run on OSgrid or is that not recommended?

I thought I'd post an update on this. I ran into problems trying to run the osgrid version of opensimulator on a CentOS 8 server. I think the problems were mostly due to the lack of a tar.gz download. The only download is in Windows .zip format which doesn't seem to preserve file permissions. Probably works great for Windows but GNU/Linux systems are not happy without all the file permissions set correctly. So what I ended up doing was downloading the official version of opensimulator and then diffing the config files against those included in the osgrid version. I was able to get the official opensimulator download running almost immediately in stand-alone mode and, after updating the config files. I now have a region connected to osgrid.

It would be cool if opensimulator offered RPM packaging for Fedora/RHEL/CentOS so you could do the install with a single command. Then maybe OSgrid could offer an additional RPM with the necessary config changes. I signed up on the opensim-dev mailing list so maybe I can get involved in the opensim development process in the future and learn more about it.

permissions on the files in the zip should be extracted by the user account they are intended to run under and it should work just fine. (Any issues can probably be fixed with chmod/chown) However pulling from git and building your own binary is fine as long as you include the following:

The modules used by the grid:

https://download.osgrid.org/OpenSimMutelist-master.zip
https://download.osgrid.org/OpenSimSearch-master.zip

and of course the OSgrid ini files:

http://download.osgrid.org/OpenSim.ini.txt
http://download.osgrid.org/GridCommon.ini.txt
http://download.osgrid.org/FlotsamCache.ini.txt

These are the only changes to OpenSimulator 0.9.2 Yeti that we do.

Its been suggested that building for release mode will give better performance.

And finally:

mono --desktop OpenSim.exe
