Heho,

we have some rumor in germany about not beeing able to delete accounts at osgrid.

some people tell me about fake usercount (well, like lindens) - other (and they are right from my perspective) state that even if they want to leave , they can´t.

there is simpl no button "delete my account".

can this be added ?

cheers,
Ralf

I don't understand the problem.
Don't want to use an account?
Don't use it.
What does it matter if the account exists if no one is using it?

Something is making people login and use accounts they don't want to?
Now I'm really confused

according to most countrys data protection laws, there must be an opt out.

that is the problem.

or in other words: clean up your mess, if you leave

personaly, i have no problem with the situation. but its easy to follow the request and could be wise as well, to make as serious.

cheers,
Ralf

Ah, now I understand.
In my mind Germany is at the forefront of personally identifiable data protection.
/me slaps head
suddenly this is a very reasonable request.
In fact, if the servers were in Germany I think there would need to be verifiable evidence
that any and all data linking to a specific Agent being present might need to be expunged.
Agent in the SecondLife/OpenSim meaning of the term (the person behind the kybd)
So yes, expunging accounts would take care of that. Records of avatar activity
would no longer be identifiable by Agent if no record of deleted Agents exist.

unfortunatly no, we will not be offering a Delete account button likely ever, no accounts will ever truely ever be deleted from this grid, if you would like your account disabled you can use https://www.osgrid.org/contact.php and we will disable your account but no accounts will ever be fully deleted from this system, And being we do not email out any information to our userbase, we do not have to offer any type of Opt Out options, these rules only apply to email spam type situations.

ok... got that..

is there a technical reason ??

then maybe a notice on that prior to account setup and a "disable account forever" button would be helpfull

and yes "forefront of personally identifiable data protection" , somehow true. basicly the americans adviced us on that after the nazi regime - for the historical background.

but interesting, the europen community is more and more adapting stuf from that.

btw - we have rules you (partly) can´t follow for practicall reasons, and they are ignored often - sometimes due to business golas, sometimes due lack of knowdledge.

so - kind of interesting here and in surrounding countries... but we had 2 major scandals in the last month (telekom, deutsche bahn) and people as well as goverment gets sensibel.

cheers,
Ralf

yes mostly for asset issues, its not really for any other reason than that, we do not store any personal information really of any kind, and we do not email information unless you request it.

new i got that and trust you.. no problem in this brain here *gg*

to me its interesting.. in the future we will need something like a "delete account"..

that could possibly be done by:

deleting inventory
deleting all data in the "about, interest .." and so on
setting a strange long cryptic password
rename the users avatar, maybe there will be even a way to not transmit those users names, so they will not apear in search etc..

would still keep their key and related assets..

from the discussion on assetes ~10 days ago i thought we even have to much copy´s - so i never thought a missing key is an issue.

as i remeber from SL, they have taht problem sometime - e.g. creator just does not resolve. does not seem to be an issue viewerside.

cheers,
Ralf

I think you may have hit upon the reasoning. If someone's account and all their assets were suddenly deleted, then anyone that may have had a copy of those assets would suddenly discover them missing.

On the other hand, allowing a delete account function (I was going to use the word "feature" but as it isn't a actually a "feature" but a normal function on most sites), would cut back on unnecessary clutter in the database and would help to clean up an ever expanding database that would eventually fail due to unmanageability.

All that considered, I can't see the harm. Sure, some people might be out objects but eventually someone will build something similar - this being a non-capitalist part of the hypergrid means they would not actually be losing anything of any financial cost
